” Bass was emphasized on the B5 in a fairly benign, mid bass way — no low bass at this size. But what remained was effective adding to the coherence we spoke about. There’s no criticism meant in suggesting this. When some oomph was required, the B5s complied. But they complied in my smaller reference music room.”

” They need not apply because Phase 3’s only real weakness is a lack of upgradability. This system does not lend itself toward adding separate preamplifiers or power amplifiers, and neither is the amplifier open-ended enough to form the basis of an upgradable system. Whether this is a problem or not comes down to the listener. If you view an audio system in terms of future audio systems, Phase 3 is not for you. If you are done with all of that, and simply want a good sounding system with no eye toward future changes, then Phase 3 is ideal. Personally, I think Phase 3 represents a significant part of audio’s future, as people move away from multiple boxes and toward simpler, uncompromised solutions.”

” Onto the overall built quality and we have housings that are also a hybrid of sorts, with a plastic ring around a metal barrel. Being a majority share of metal I can’t find any faults and obviously I have said enough when it comes to the cable connectors. As for the actual cable it is what we have seen time and time again on the last haul of Dunu products which is a solid enough cable with the fancy little cable wind up. The only worry I have is where the cable goes into the MMCX housings it seems to be quite pinched. I am excited for the next two models as I have seen some pictures of them with some fancier looking braided cables!”

“I never tire of putting the first movement of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony to work. For the HiFiMan, I trotted out two very different versions. Bernard Haitink’s recording with the London Symphony Orchestra (48/24) has an uneven distribution of frequencies across the stage with much of the lighter-textured instruments at far right, requiring high resolution, precise imaging, and a certain amount of treble prominence to balance out the darker-toned instruments at the left. The HiFiMan maintained the recording’s idiosyncratic equilibrium. Carlos Kleiber’s historic recording with the Vienna Philharmonic (FLAC, 88.2/24) is my go-to version for texture, layering, blastability, and emotional connection.”

“Paired with Bowers & Wilkins’ 805 D3 speakers, the Minotaur’s transparency came to the fore. In fact, I never once thought the Minotaur sounded like a tube amplifier. There was no added warmth or richness, or softened bass I associate with tube electronics. The Minotaur is neutral and clean, and the 805 D3s made that perfectly clear. It was also powerful and dynamics were uninhibited, so the Minotaur got out of the way while letting the music speak for itself.”

” The earphones are designed to be worn over ear and as such you wont have any issues with micro-phonics. Memory in the ear guides works well, its a pretty basic design but is done right and keeps the earphones in place even when moving around a lot. A nice little custom CA branded clear jack is found at the 3.5mm point with decent strain relief attached and up the other end the TRRS connectors are equally well done They lock into the earpieces with a solid click and the swivel when engaged is butter smooth.”

” Although Vivid Audio’s Oval B1 received a Reviewers’ Choice award when it was reviewed, it was never recognized as a Recommended Reference Component, mostly because of its bass deficiencies. Had Laurence Dickie addressed only those problems and called the result the Oval B1 Decade, that alone would have been enough to qualify the new version as a Recommended Reference Component. But his complete revision of the B1 has made the Oval B1 Decade a considerably better speaker than its forebear in many aspects of its sound — a speaker that not only deserves being included in our list of Recommended Reference Components, but that can also be called one of the best speakers available at any price.”

While it may not be the quietest preamp I’ve heard, and its operation is less than intuitive, the Inspiration Preamp 1.0 redefines what $9900 can buy in terms of transparency, refinement, sophistication, inner detail, color saturation, and overall fidelity to the original recording. In fact, considering that the Inspiration Preamp 1.0 has the same circuit topology found at the very top of the Constellation line at a fraction of the price, it may be one of the best values in the market today.”
