The Franco Serblin Studio Ktema speakers showcased at the new Sound Factor showroom in Finland. In the showroom, bass resonances are managed using precisely calibrated Helmholtz resonators, while sidewall reflections are controlled with cylindrical slat diffusers. The front wall is constructed from plywood but does not incorporate dedicated acoustic treatment elements.

For me the biggest news was the 1300G’s delta-sigma drive system: a digital rotational control technology that, according to Technics, suppresses microvibrations.
According to the Technics website: “The ΔΣ-Drive uses delta-sigma conversion technology to reduce errors in the drive signals, obtaining low distortion drive signals through highly precise PWM generation technology. It also helps to reduce the minor rotational inaccuracies and minute vibrations that cannot be picked up with wow and flutter or S/N ratios.”
This noise-reducing technology is assisted in its tasks by Technics’ Multi-Stage Silent Power Supply, which features active noise canceling.
The result of these new technologies, as I describe in my auditioning below, is a modestly priced record player that performs (noise-, speed-stability-, and momentum-wise) like those big-ticket luxury decks

Peachtree Audio’s Carina GaN is a feature-rich integrated amplifier. The ability to integrate a Bluesound Node is a major bonus. Given its high-quality MM phono input, making the Carina GaN the hub of a vinyl playback system is no challenge. Headphone fans will find the Carina GaN a pleasure to listen to, and its high-quality build, attractive styling, and compact form factor should allow it to fit into just about any home or office environment. Peachtree Audio’s Carina GaN integrated amplifier has provided me with a new appreciation for power-DAC audio amplification. The Carina GaN is a peach of an amplifier. Maybe you should give it a taste.

It should be noted that Gryphon has opted for the path less taken with their PS3 Phono Stage; only a single pair of balanced Neutrik XLR inputs is included—there are no single-ended RCA inputs. Robert Harley states in his Complete Guide to High-End Audio: “Balanced phono inputs are rare on a preamplifier; virtually all phono cables are terminated with unbalanced RCA plugs, not balanced XLR connectors.” I have never owned a turntable set up with a balanced output. I checked with VPI President Mat Weisfeld, and indeed the tonearm of my VPI HW40 could be rewired—but then it would not work with my current reference preamp, which only accepts RCA inputs for the phono stage. To take full advantage of the PS3 Phono Stage module, in terms of signal/noise issues, customers would be advised to look into this possibility, depending on their own turntable design. For this review, I settled on a stereo cable terminated on one end with RCAs, and on the other with XLRs, figuring this would yield a better result than using cheap adapters.

Gary elaborated further on this decision: “I’ve always had an issue with measurements because there are things I can measure that I don’t hear, and there are things I can hear that I don’t know (yet?) how to measure. The published sensitivity figure of 85dB 1 watt 1 meter is the traditional ‘anechoic’ measurement. When I mentioned 87dB to you, it’s with white noise using a high-power amplifier delivering constant voltage, which is more real-world to me. It is the same with frequency response. I publish a ‘musical range’ referencing music notes. An anechoic frequency response from these speakers is not representative as the double bass in a jazz quartet would be completely missing if you read the numbers instead of listening to music.”
The smooth, warm and gorgeous presentation of this pair put a huge smile on my face–I enjoy the Allnic so much but I don’t always have a pair of efficient speakers to use with them. After a few weeks, I felt that the pairing could struggle a bit to energize the room with enough bass, so I swapped the Fern and Roby in. The Amp No. 2’s 25 watts per channel sounded more in control of the Minuets’ low frequency performance. This, of course, was a supremely enjoyable pairing for a reasonable amount of money–just $18k and change for amplification and speakers, and you even get an excellent inboard phono stage thrown in.

The headphones can be set to different sized heads by a gliding mechanism, which keeps the cups steadily in place. The headband-design is rather normal sized, but there is no real weight-dispersion in place. And with the 490 grams weight, this becomes an issue. After roughly 20 minutes I can feel the pressure build up on my scalp to a point where I have to move the headphones around or take them off entirely in order to avoid discomfort.
