KISO ACOUSTICS HB-X1 STANDMOUNT LOUDSPEAKER REVIEW
November 27, 2015 § 1 Comment
“The Kiso Acoustics HB-X1 is always going to be a niche product. It’s a small speaker for a big room that sounds like a much bigger speaker, and many will just buy a bigger speaker instead. But not everyone: some want big speaker sound without big speakers, and are prepared to pay big speaker money for the best small speakers they can get. And, they are exactly the people who will be seduced by the utterly captivating, utterly believable sound. Through the Kiso speakers, If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears is more than just an album by The Mamas and the Papas!”

ORIOLUS 4-DRIVER HYBRIDS – Review
November 26, 2015 Comments Off on ORIOLUS 4-DRIVER HYBRIDS – Review
” Heaping blanket praise on a midrange-meaty earphone is against a trance-head’s morals. I’m about to sin big time. Oriolus spits contrasty, speedy, wide mids. They shoot straight out of Oriolus’s strong, thwacky bass, never to get mired by either bass or high mids. They rise fastest and highest just below the shininess where mids go meet the highs. There’s a bit of wet reverb that keeps female vocals fractionally hanging on. And male vocals are bite authoritatively. The entire band is wide, relatively deep, and round out an impressive 3D image.”

Matrix Quattro II DAC – Review

“Playing through my Marantz CD-52 SE > Coax > Quattro II > PM-44 MKII SE > Mission 702e it is incredibly clean and crisp. It really brings out the air and subtle detail in music, and with the setup I have this compliments it very nicely as it is a tad on the warmer side usually. It doesn’t lack body however, it is very flat and true to source not adding any real flavour of its own.”

“All controls on the front panel are motorized and may be controlled by a remote, which is still in the works. Although motorized volume controls are readily available, Axel lamented not being able to find motorized switches of sufficient quality for use with the Orpheus. Their answer: They used motorized pots; built some custom spring-loaded detents for then so they had a satisfactory “click”; and then use the voltage sensed to trigger mode switching.”

The (New) Hi-Res Buzz

“Further complicating things, you’ll also find disagreement among the people who make hi-res capable hardware as well as the people who make hi-res recordings. Is 24-bit/96kHz the holy grail of hi-res? Or is 24-bit/192kHz better? Or is DSD the best? Or double DSD? Or quad DSD? The real answer is none of the above. You see, the most important thing, even with hi-res audio, is the music. Music comes first. If all you care about is sound quality, listen to the wind in the trees. If you want to enjoy music, listen to music you enjoy.”

Antipodes DS Music Server Review

” I used the DS as a server feeding a number of DACs including my reference Auralic Vega as well as the T+A player and the DS improved the overall sonic performance in every case. I did not try playing music from a NAS since 4TB of storage is plenty for me. If you read my review of the Antipodes DX, you’ll read that I found that a mounted NAS sounded nearly as good as playing back from internal storage. Since VortexBox supports third party apps including IckStream, you can also play from streaming services including Tidal Hi-Fi, which I did, often. Sound quality wise, Tidal sounded just great and I’d add noticeably better than when streaming from my MacBook using the Tidal App.”

AURENDER FLOW DAC/HEADPHONE AMP$1,300 REVIEW
November 25, 2015 Comments Off on AURENDER FLOW DAC/HEADPHONE AMP$1,300 REVIEW
” I used the Flow with a wide variety of earphones from highly sensitive in-ear monitors to my least efficient full-sized headphones, and I was pleasantly surprised that they all worked well. Even with the most sensitive Westone ES-5 there was only the very faintest bit of low-level hiss. At the other end of the efficiency spectrum, the Flow had more than enough power to drive Beyer Dynamic DT-990 600-ohm version well past loud. The Flow is the first headphone amplifier I’ve experienced that didn’t need multiple gain settings to successfully accommodate a full range of headphone options.”
