The best turntables of the 21st century

Althought the Clearaudio Emotion won a Best Buy in 2006, it was pipped to Product of The Year by Pro-ject’s RPM 5. Pro-ject’s Debut range of decks was domiating the budget turntable arena, but it was the new RPM5 that stood out as one of the finest products we’d tested in 2006.

Tonal balance seems pretty even. Both range extremes are rolled-off—one should count on very deep bass, nor on highest treble—these speakers won’t offer that. I think Mr Barletta did make an informed decision—instead of trying to make Perla sound bigger than they really are, he accepted their limitations and within this perimeter he tried to realize his vision of sound. And this vision focuses on timbral accuracy, coherency and spacing. All these three elements are linked together and the result is something more than just timbre, coherency and spacing.

t I could hear their sound begin to coarsen. But I couldn’t be sure if it was the speakers hitting their output limits, or the amplifier clipping, or my large room overloading. If you want to get down’n’dirty with some raucous rock, metal, or any music played at lifelike levels, know that the Domain Omni PX1s can take it. They are not delicate flowers.
TEO Audio Liquid Cables Review

Pertaining to aesthetic matters, I strongly suggest if you have issues about the appearance of cables which might have an airborne loop or emerge from above the back of a component that you get over it, because should you not be able to handle such minor perturbations, you will have rejected a cable much finer sounding than the one you would buy in its place. But again, as a matter of practicality, if you are considering TEO cables be sure that you can have a good amount of connection space, both vertical and horizontal, at the back of the component or speakers for attachment of the cables.
Review: Fostex TE-07

Build quality I would say is slightly better than the TE-05, the housing feels better machined than the TE-05, and looks a bit better in my opinion. The cable is very soft and comfortable, and is detachable using MMCX connectors, it has very good strain relief but there is no chin slider unfortunately. Overall very good build quality and the detachable cable is a great feature.

LINN MAJIK DSM INTEGRATED STREAMING AMPLIFIER

The next step was to put the CM10 S2 into a likely real world practical position. This left 18cm between the back of the speaker and the wall on both channels. Listening to Pink Floyd’s ‘Money’ [Dark Side of the Moon, EMI] after applying optimisation made a surprising difference to the realism of the cash till sound; suddenly they sounded like real trays full of coins rather than splashly metallic sounds. This was a convincing demonstration of the benefits to a part of the audio band that Space Optimisation doesn’t touch, but which clearly benefits from a removal of low end smearing. It’s often stated that the treble provides the leading edges that give bass more precision and impact but you don’t often hear the benefits that cleaner bass brings to the mids and highs. You can hear that the bass becomes a lot more controlled compared to its bloated nature at this near-the-wall position, but the clarity gained higher up the range is the real reward.

REVIEW: ALO AUDIO CDM

Both units don’t come cheap. CDM costs $1495 or €1495. Hugo is a tad more expensive and is going for €1799 but in USD it is $2495. So it’s actually a smaller difference for us Europeans then it is for US based customers. I have to applaud Chord for that really, there’s no reason EU citizens always have to pay more than US citizens. $1000 does not equal €1000, yet we often have to pay that amount, with taxes and administrative fees on top of that. But I’m getting side tracked.
Parasound Halo Integrated 2.1 Channel Amplifier With DAC

Now I could get a much better handle on the imaging and deep bass performance. Certainly the Integrated can reach down deep, and maintain its pitch article all the way down. There is no noticeable roll off. It doesn’t quite maintain the absolute focus of the reference preamp / amp (EMM Labs Pre2 / ModWright KWA150 SE), or reach the same levels of resolution and speed, but this is still a strong performance. However the treble does not have the sweetness of the reference, sounding a little aggressive on material such as Benny Green’s Greens, particularly on the brushes.
Sony NW-ZX100HN hands on

Looking at the side profile, the ZX100HN also appears slimmer and neater than the ZX2 – the mound which protrudes out of the back of the flagship model hasn’t transferred further down the food chain. Instead, the ZX100HN favours a more streamlined look with a subtle bump. The back panel, meanwhile, now seems to be covered in textured rubber instead of leather.
