” The primary argument you’ll hear against ALAC is that it’s an “Apple” technology and users don’t want to be locked into Apple technologies in any way shape or form and want their stuff to be open source and royalty free down the road. I’m not here to take a stand one way or the other, but rather to say this is what I’ve primarily heard as the main points why people are against ALAC.”

” If we’re talking generalizations, which is exactly what a conclusion generally is, my feeling are a preference towards the Astell&Kern $499 AK Jr over the original $1299 AK120 reviewed in August 2013 and that, in itself, says quite a bit about how good this little Jr reproduces music! The compromises made are right in line with exactly what I’d prefer. Keep the musical harmonics to the slightly nice versus sterile side of life,

“Conversely, if you’ve got a high-impedance headphone, employing CDM’s DAC will net you more volume. CDM won’t bleed your DT880/600 anything like TELOS. At its highest volume setting, and when fed a USB signal, it spits about 20dB more volume than I can comfortably take. And CDM performs near flawlessly right up until a full twist of the volume pot, in either gain mode”

VPI PRIME £3,750 Review

” We British types have a peculiar connection with how something ‘times’, but through the Prime, you begin to see this is making a feature out of a limitation; that deep, powerful bass doesn’t make for a taut, boppy sound unless it’s on the recording. So, Zakir Hussain’s Making Music [ECM], presents itself as an expansive soundstage. The pace and energy of the players is retained (and they are fast – John McLaughlin is the guitarist!), but not in a forced way. The Prime has excellent contrast, texture, and musical shading, too. All the hallmarks of a super-deck, save for the price! ”

Paradigm Studio Monitor loudspeaker Review

” This is not the first time I’ve noticed low-end problems with loudspeakers which rely on two closely coupled drivers to cover the bass region. It can sometimes be done successfully by rolling off one of the drivers below the midbass. The problem is one of mutual reinforcement, a phenomenon in which two drivers, mounted in close proximity to each other, mutually reinforce each other’s output across a limited frequency band. This may well be the cause of the problem here.”

Decware Zen Mystery Amp $5,695 Review

“Regardless of the tracks chosen, subtlety abounds with this amp, and it continually offers little surprises on so many records that I’ve been listening to for years. And listening to new music is equally dreamy. Trent Reznor’s soundtrack for the recent movie Gone Girl is so good it’s scary, constantly reminding me of the tension in the film. Reznor is known for his ability to build a dense and ethereal soundscape—and the ZMA, combined with the GamuT RS5 speakers, envelops me in so much more than what I might call a soundstage with another amplifier. The ZMA creates a hyper-real, three-dimensional sound sphere. While a record like this does not provide the picture of musical accuracy that your favorite Blue Note might, it does have many layers of minute detail—and through a less-capable amplifier, those details just don’t come through in the same dreamy sonic picture that the ZMA paints.”

An Inside Look at Meridian’s Master Quality Authenticated (MQA)

“Meridian’s pursuit of techniques to increase timing precision was inspired by recent findings in psychoacoustics and neuroscience. The temporal blur target of 10µs is based on this research. The AES paper mentioned earlier is full of citations to psychoacoustic and neuroscience literature. Timing is so important because our hearing mechanism is acutely tuned to impulsive sounds for instantly determining the “where, then what” of the object creating the sound. The distortion of these vital cues by temporal blur diminishes the sense of musical realism in a variety of ways. In the accompanying interview, Bob Stuart describes in more detail why temporal blur is so detrimental to sound quality”
