Vision Ears EXT MKII Review
December 15, 2024 Comments Off on Vision Ears EXT MKII Review
The reduced nozzle diameter and what seems to be just a hint of additional smoothness on the perpendicular angling of the EXT MKII’s unique shell reduce the outward pressure on my ear canal making it a comfortable yet very secure fitting.
The circular nozzle is most appreciated with the supplied stock tips. On the older model, I had a horrible time fitting the AZLA crystal tips and ended up using the SpinFit CP145 stock tips instead for the last 3 years. The offshoot after 3 years is a warped tip stem that only works with the EXT nozzle and is now too loose for other IEMs.

FiiO BTR17$199 Review
December 15, 2024 Comments Off on FiiO BTR17$199 Review
The overall sonic character of the FiiO BTR17 reminds me of my M11 Pro but there seems to be a sonic refinement in certain areas.
The BTR17 does have some power circuitry improvements and an updated DAC section which is certainly the source of improvement.
The overall sonic experience could be summed up as neutral, vivid, and crisp, with a bass response that is a bit dry but rich in detail, punchy, and dynamic.
The midrange never veers from sounding natural and is correctly represented as far as overall balance and pitch are concerned.
The high frequencies are sharp and crisp but are highly dependent on signal quality particularly if you’re tapped into the Bluetooth front end. Using the BTR17 on an LDAC codec, you get 90% of the sound quality you get connected directly to a USB source.

Premiere Kronos Discovery Turntable $100,000 Review

While Louis drew the name Discovery from his journey of discovering new improvements to the basic design at every connection and interface, as a listener, I would have named it “The Presence” because that is the effect that it brings to music reproduction. If the rest of the system is up to the task and properly implemented in the room, the music will have an extraordinary presence. It is this presence, I surmise, that captivates my attention in multiple dimensions — both physical and musical — that envelops the three-dimensionality of the earlier Kronos models by taking the musical experience to a higher plane.
Is this the greatest turntable in the world? I don’t think anyone can truly answer that question. I came. I listened. I was immensely impressed with what I heard. I decided the question is irrelevant. Louis Desjardins has reached his mountain top with the Discovery. There may be others who reverse engineer his design someday, but the trip down the mountain is always less rewarding than the climb up. For those who can afford to climb this mountain, it is the time spent at the peak that is most treasured — enjoying your music. The view is spectacular.

iFi Go Link Max $79 review

When comparing the Go Link Max’s performance with that of the slightly cheaper Go Link, there isn’t much difference in detail resolution. Still, the information dug out by the newer device goes a decent way beyond what you’d get if you were simply listening without a DAC at all. That said, sticking with Hysteria but switching to the standard Go Link grants the tune more nimbleness and clarity while revealing the older model’s superior ability with vocals. For injecting the right tunes with a good deal of meaty muscle, especially at the lower end, the newer Max does dial things up a notch, but we concede that some listeners may prefer the more affordable Go Link’s purer, cleaner sonic personality.

Alta Audio Aphrodite Speakers Review

Creative, highly improvisational, exploratory, and mystical sounding with masterful musicianship, Aphrodite’s spatial cues made me feel like I was inside the church with its high ceilings and reverberations. Track 11, “Este a Székelyeknél” (In the evening at the Székelys), is based on a Hungarian-Transylvanian folk tune composed for piano by Béla Bartók in 1908 (from Ten Easy Piano Pieces); Bartók then orchestrated it in 1931 with woodwinds and strings (No. 1 from Hungarian Sketches). At times, both Frisell’s guitar work and Downes’ organ imitated the high-pitched wood instruments of the Bartók orchestral version, while Cyrille tastefully chimed in with the resonating bells on his cymbals. It gave the piece a pleasant, oriental-like sound that Aphrodite displayed with impressive finesse and delicacy

Project V1 Power Cable And AC Duplex Wall Ensemble Review
December 13, 2024 Comments Off on Project V1 Power Cable And AC Duplex Wall Ensemble Review
The Project V1 power cable was a different story. It is clearly a top-flight power cable but its return on investment is not as generous as the NCF Power Vault. It has a price that puts it in a range where you should very carefully audition it before buying. The difference between the V1 and the performance of my Synergistic cables at close to a quarter of the cost amounts to fine-tuning so you probably want your rig to be fairly well sorted out before you start spending very large sums like this on power cables. Like all things Furutech, the fit and finish were superb.
Investing in the Furutech Duplex Outlet, Duplex Plate, and Wall Plate adds up to $541 which starts to look like serious money for a plug in the wall but in the context of a rig costing tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars, it is something that deserves serious consideration, particularly if you are unable to route a dedicated line to your system. If you are apprehensive, do it in stages. Start with the duplex outlet and progress to the duplex plate and finally the wall plate. And if you have multiple dedicated lines, start with the one for your low-powered source components where the benefits will eventually find their way to your power amps and speakers. For years, the word on the street was that Furutech duplex outlets were the best. The new GTX-D NCF R Duplex Outlet exceeded my expectations and is a very high-value product.
