Pro-Ject Audio Systems XA B Turntable and Pick it Pro Balanced Cartridge $1499 Review

December 11, 2024 Comments Off on Pro-Ject Audio Systems XA B Turntable and Pick it Pro Balanced Cartridge $1499 Review

This is the fourth Pro-Ject turntable I’ve reviewed, and I confess that I didn’t expect to like it as much as I did. Although its clean, neutral demeanor embodies Pro-Ject’s house sound, it’s the XA B’s intriguing design that sets it apart from those other models. Even when it’s not spinning records, it’s a conversation piece, and it’s certain to elicit attention even from non-audiophiles. For $1499, anyone buying an XA B will have the pleasure of owning a turntable that can likely hold its own sonically against anything at its price point, and, as I found in my comparison, quite a bit higher. However, they’ll also have the pleasure of purchasing something that is almost certainly going to look better than much of the competition. Don’t get me wrong: Pro-Ject’s XA B is first and foremost a great performer, and that’s the main reason you should add it to your list of decks to audition if you’re shopping anywhere around and even above this price point. The cherry on top is that it looks stunning as well, proving that sometimes you can have your cake and eat it too. Enthusiastically recommended.

Launched alongside the N801 was the actual range-topper, the Nautilus 800, the single 380mm bass replaced by a pair of 250mm units. It cost more, at well over £10,000 per pair, but was slimmer, easier for amplifiers to drive and didn’t need a huge room to work well.

Bowers & Wilkins (as the company is now) went on to introduce diamond tweeters with the 800D range, now in its D4 iteration. The Nautilus itself is still listed, with a 30th anniversary edition launched last year at a mere £100,000 per pair. But there is a waiting list.

Wilson Audio The WATT/Puppy Review

December 10, 2024 Comments Off on Wilson Audio The WATT/Puppy Review

https://www.hifinews.com/content/wilson-audio-wattpuppy

Despite the way The WATT/Puppy dealt with both the delicate and the majestic, it was the latter that proved the most enticing. The speaker was proving to be the opposite of the diminutive LS3/5A, for example, to which I turn for savouring vocals. Thus I was driven to playing the whole of Led Zeppelin II [Atlantic SD8236], with which John Bonham’s juggernaut drumming came ascloseasthis to the Sasha V. The slam, the dryness of the bass drum, the sizzle of the cymbals were reproduced with such command that I was finding it difficult to imagine more.

What sold me, however, was a raw performance from a long-forgotten various artists LP sampler from 1973, Let It Rock [Atlantic K40455]. After a blistering ‘Back In The USA’ by MC5, all scorching guitars with greater speed than The Ramones could muster, I sat back to savour Magic Dick’s harmonica lead on J. Geils Band’s ‘Pack Fair And Square’. Arguably the greatest harp solo in history, it soars while testing clarity and transient crispness. It was, to put it succinctly, as in-the-room as I have ever heard in 50-plus years of loving it.

Silent Pound Challenger II Speakers €27,999 Review

They have a high engagement factor, drawing one into the music and allowing to fully enjoy and comprehend what is being conveyed. Their clever design makes them easy to place and position, and their patented midrange driver enables sound to expand far beyond the speakers, creating a remarkable horizontal and vertical soundstage.

The same goes for the depth of the sonic sphere, where the Challenger II allows music to emerge from a deep, black background, cutting through with refreshing airiness while staying true to the realistic portrayal of musicians and instruments.

Voices and instruments are presented with lifelike size, drum attacks are sharp and fast, and the leading edges of notes retain their crispness. This enables the Challenger II to instantly lock into the beat, reproducing music with stand-out clarity, transparency, and vividness.

Astell&Kern SP3000T $3,699 Review

December 9, 2024 Comments Off on Astell&Kern SP3000T $3,699 Review

Of course the biggest feature here is the presence of vacuum tubes, for which Astell&Kern did a lot of work on minimizing the microphonic noise. AK uses a matched set of RAYTHEON JAN6418 miniature vacuum tubes, which are very popular in portable audio designs nowadays. This tube is designed to meet military specifications and traditionally was used in military communication equipment. It quickly garnered recognition for its distinctively warm and soft sound, leading to its integration into regular audio devices.
