Of course the biggest feature here is the presence of vacuum tubes, for which Astell&Kern did a lot of work on minimizing the microphonic noise. AK uses a matched set of RAYTHEON JAN6418 miniature vacuum tubes, which are very popular in portable audio designs nowadays. This tube is designed to meet military specifications and traditionally was used in military communication equipment. It quickly garnered recognition for its distinctively warm and soft sound, leading to its integration into regular audio devices.

The ambient information around the guitar, his gravelly baritone, the smooth guitar response, and the bass are better defined than I’ve heard previously. So many cues from the Symphony made my ears perk up. Nothing, even Ricks’ most subtle guitar playing, escapes. And that old audiophile axiom “Rhythm, Pace and Dynamics“ was highlighted in “Ain’t No Fool” and then focused specifically on accelerated rhythm in “Frisco Whistle Blues.” The guitar timbre is outstanding, and his strumming was made especially beautiful. The coda of “Down Delta” will convince you of Ricks’ virtuosity and the Symphony’s superior playback.

or the most salient of comparisons in my reference system, after installing the two-an-a-half meter spade terminated speaker cables ($150,900/pair) between my True Life Audio SSA-350 monos and my Von Schweikert Audio ULTRA 9 loudspeakers, I installed the one-meter balanced interconnects ($68,000/pair) between my DSA Phono III phonostage and my True Life Audio SSP-1 linestage, and the two meter AC power cord ($51,800) to power the DSA Phono III as well. And, I did them in that order, with considerable time in between each installation, in the hopes that I would be able to identify each product’s individual contribution to the resultant sound.

NAD M66 streaming preamplifier $5499 Review

It is hard to think that any user would exhaust the M66’s options. As an analog preamp, as a digital “preamp,” as a DAC, as a room-correction tool, as a Roon endpoint or BluOS-based streamer, its functional and sonic performance is outstanding, and it seems optimal with all sources (though I didn’t try the phono inputs). The learning curve was relatively short, and as I learned to use it, I found it easy to use despite its extraordinary range of functions. The NAD M66 is a tour de force!
