Everything feels like it was designed to work together and the result is very enjoyable. The power output might struggle with something truly demanding, but a significant amount of testing takes place with the Focal Kanta No1 (HFC 454), which doesn’t prove a challenge for it at any stage. Furthermore, the forensically revealing speaker doesn’t reveal anything significantly amiss with the way that the RS201E makes music.

The SP3000T is beautifully designed. On the exterior, you’re greeted with a silver-plated body and hairline finish. (There’s also a Copper version of the SP3000T available as well). A glass panel adorns the front and rear panels, the bottom 3/4 of the back panel being matte. The top portion features those twin glowing red vacuum tubes. The right edge of the player features a volume wheel, which has an LED light that flows out. It’s illuminated in different colors depending on the bit depth of the music that’s playing.

Hegel H400 streaming integrated amplifier $6995 Review

Over the past decade, the definition of a Hegel integrated amp has grown to include more and different input sources and functionality. Over the same period, the company’s inflation-adjusted retail prices have dropped. In 2016, the Hegel H360 offered about the same power and analog input choices as the H400 at a retail price of $5700—about $7392 in 2024 dollars. Yet, the list price of the H400 is $6995. That’s still a heavy lift for some budgets, but considering the amplifier’s power, build quality, and full-function built-in streamer with app control, it’s quite a value. Add the amplifier’s excellent sound quality and tight control of various speaker loads, and the H400 is worth a close look if you’re in the market for a future-facing integrated amplifier. It’s a neat thing, comfortable on the internet.

VPE Electrodynamics Crystal Dipole Speaker & Model 1 DSP Dipole Subwoofer $4,000 Review

This article is about an affordable full-range speaker that performs. It is also about a companion a dipole subwoofer for enhancing the full-range speaker’s performance. The subwoofer also is fitting for use with particular smaller to medium priced and sized Magnepan dipole speakers. The full-range VPE Electrodynamics Crystal Dipole cost $3K/pr and a pair of the Model 1 Powered Dipole Subwoofers cost $1K each. The speaker systems total is $5K, which is reachable for many. As someone who spent about a decade trying to get SOTA sound for a pittance, I find the Crystal Dipole and Model 1 Subwoofer to be products very worth of the budget audiophile’s time. Is it worth the time for audiophiles higher up the equipment food chain? Let’s find out!

There is roughly a 5 dB drop from 20Hz to 200Hz with less presence from the sub-bass right up to lower mids. Thereafter, or from around 1k there is roughly 2 dB less elevation than the default tuning up to 7k so vocal imaging drops back a little creating a slightly more relaxed midrange presentation.
Switch 3 also has more treble energy than the rest of the switch options and it’s the option where you can best hear the EST driver’s presence on higher-pitching instrumental timbre.

Sonetto V G2 £5500 Review

Schifrin was asked to re-record this theme for the movie’s soundtrack release [Warner Bros. 9362480852], and he obliged with a poppier, less moody take. A back-to-back listen through the new Sonetto V showed the difference, not just in instrument choice and melody, but in terms of dynamics (more forthright) and stereo mix (disjointed).
This, then, is another strength of Sonus faber’s Sonetto V G2: a revealing nature not just in terms of top-end detail, but of other musical building blocks. Playing Jason Isbell’s ‘Cover Me Up’ [Southeastern; Southeastern Records], it threw a spotlight on the careworn vocal and unearthed a wide dynamic, making apparent the emphasis Isbell puts on certain chords and lyrics. Behind him, a slide guitar sounded syrupy and reverberant with just the right amount of distortion. This was fine stuff, and worthy of the price tag.
