In practice, subtle instrumental nuances, whether in the foreground or from supporting players in the background, would often ‘come to the front’ when the series was played through the M1. Additionally, the ability to switch from Direct or Stereo playback mode to a Virtual option via the HEOS app was a bit of a boon, ensuring excerpts from Gary Numan’s ‘Cars’ were laid more expansively in the room, albeit with an acceptable smudge of hotness added. It’s a nice extra on a dual-use amp like this, and while I know some will avoid this mode when listening to their classical or acoustic recordings, here it makes sense.

The Aegis – according to ZMF – will be shipped within a period of 2 to 5 business days for 120V customers – while all 230/240v units will ship directly from Cayin within ten days. In Europe you can buy the 220V version of Aegis with the obligatory CE Certification for €4.099 Euro from one of ZMF’s dealers. As the Aegis originally is a DIY amplifier, it still is possible to build it yourself. That is unless you have two left hands, like me.

The 705 S3 Signature has the sort of all-round performance charm you expect from a B&W speaker, its sound being rich, energetic and suited to any genre. At the same time, the skill with which it crafts detailed, authentic images, and its ability to pick out the tiniest of musical details, makes its premium price seem entirely worthwhile. Design and build are superb too – you just need to pick a colour. Me? Midnight Blue.

Never before have I reviewed a stand-alone streamer/server so accomplished in the hardware department, yet so behind the best in software implementation. True, my review collection has been limited to five or six server/streamers from Innuos, Aurender, Antipodes, and Roon, many of whose initial software releases also cried out for improvement. But as the years have progressed, each of those companies has made great strides in software design while also upgrading their hardware.
Nonetheless, as much as Ideon has some catching up to do software-wise, some other companies could learn a thing or two from Ideon’s technological achievements. I fully believe you will hear the music you love to listen to via file playback or streaming better and sink deeper into its power and mystery if you listen through the Ideon Absolute Stream meta edition (2024). Your satisfaction will increase if you feed the Absolute Stream with a network switch that reclocks data and outputs via LAN (Ethernet). Your joy will increase even more if you feed it with the Ideon Alpha Wave, which reclocks data and outputs via USB. In fact, you may love this combo’s sound so much that you’ll stick with FLAC files, which the Absolute Stream’s proprietary software processes very well, or embrace the Absolute Stream’s easy-peasy option of Roon playback.

The ESOTERIC SACD of Brahms’ Symphony No. 2 (originally released on Philips in 1963) is a spectacular example of ESOTERIC’s famous remastering for compact discs (their new vinyl remasterings are superb, too). The London Symphony Orchestra sounds dramatic and very beautiful as guided by Pierre Monteux. All instruments’ timbral cues are wonderful via ESOTERIC mastering and the AQWO 2’s advanced DAC, but those soaring violins are sweet and when things get thick in the mix like the famous viola syncopations in the first movement, the AQWO 2 unravels things easily. This was luxury SACD playback.
