Java Double Shot Power Amplifier Review

The Auditorium Plus speakers play well with a 60 wpc amplifier. Still, their lovely, spatial nature shrinks a bit, and the lowest of low frequencies lack the authority and control that a big amplifier delivers. Again, the Double Shot makes these $150k speakers come alive. Because of their wide range, Electronica, Hip Hop, and a lot of current music really comes alive because so much of it has a strong bass groove. No Taylor Swift for me, but Charli xcx’s “Talk Talk” suits the power this amplifier delivers. That bass groove is killer, and the louder, the better.

Ditto for the drums in Beth Gibbons’ “Burden of Life.” Again, at moderate to high listening levels, Gibbons’ voice isn’t clobbered by the drums, losing its way. These types of musical excursions don’t feel the same without big power, but the clarity, pace, and texture the Double Shot has is equally important. It’s not a double shot of crap coffee; it’s a double shot of fantastic coffee!

Moving on to the Mon Acoustics standmount speakers we reviewed earlier this year, a pair of MartinLogan ESL 9s, and the new Magnepan 2.7x speakers all make for an excellent match with the Double Shot. The same characteristics that are easily discernable in the more refined speakers are available here. Nothing makes even a speaker like the compact MONs come alive like plenty of reserve power. If you’re a Magnepan lover, you know that extra power helps these speakers deliver their all. I’ll be discussing the Java amps more in an upcoming review of the Magnepan 2.7x’s, and this double shot is one of the most exciting pairings I’ve ever heard with a Magneplanar speaker at any price. The synergy with MartinLogan speakers is equally thrilling.

FiiO SR11 $99 Review

It easily redirected all media playback, including Apple Music, Spotify, and even YouTube, through the SR11. Apple Music integration was seamless, with a signal path indicator that ensured sound played through the SR11 instead of my phone speakers.

macOS integration was equally impressive, allowing me to stream not just Apple Music and Spotify but also my FLAC collection from Foobar2000.

However, the SR11 struggled with my mesh network, causing frequent dropouts, though this issue disappeared when I switched to a single access point

I would happily live forever with the CH Precision L1, especially paired with the X1. Considering the prices and CH Precision’s perfectionist approach, this is not surprising. What is surprising is how much extra performance apparently remains unrealized, even in a very well-designed product, as demonstrated by the improvement when the X1 was employed. I find myself wondering how much room for improvement is still out there, waiting to be realized. How much better could a four-box L1/X1 system, or the L10 preamp, be?

Orchard Audio PecanPi+ Streamer Premium DAC $1499 Review

For someone looking for a quality streamer and a serious pair of mono amps as a nice little just-add-speakers system, a PecanPi+ Streamer Premium and a pair of Starkrimson Mono amplifiers, at just under $4000, represent a solid value.

The PecanPi+ Streamer Premium’s no-frills approach is admittedly a bit weird in the current hi-fi landscape, one where there’s a push to offer as many features in a single product as possible. But that allows it to pack the latest AKM Velvetsound chip under the hood and keep under $1500. That it also incorporates a great touch screen and top-notch audio circuitry is very unusual at this price level; few bare-bones network streamers at a comparable price offer that.

That’s according to the team at Discogs – pushing back against incorrect claims that vinyl sales took a dip for the first time in years, they report that re-evaluated figures have actually shown record sales have taken yet another jump upwards in popularity
