It should be clear by now that we rate the Discovery 3Zero very highly, as we did their bigger A.C.T. 3Zero siblings. If you are after a transparent and revealing pair of speakers then there are few alternatives as capable as these. They may be hugely expensive but when partnered well and carefully set up they are capable of sounding magical.

Technics SU-GX70 Network Audio Amplifier $2,000 Review

But was there enough power? On a track like “Wicked as it Seems,” the Technics had no issues delivering a “comfortably loud” listening level, via my not-too-sensitive Energys, in my 3100 cubic-foot studio. But asking for much more quickly revealed the limits, and attempting something like what I think of as “control-room” loudness — that is, peaks nudging 100 dB SPL, which in all honesty is too loud for safe long-term listening — produced a bright, hard-edged, quashed-sounding texture. If you’re in a smaller room with typical sensitivity speakers (say, 87 dB SPL at 1 watt/meter or better), I’d wager you’d be just fine, but in my setup, more juice was needed.

Vertere Acoustics MG-1 Turntable $23,089 Review

The distinct timbres of the vocals and guitar were perfectly preserved. The leading edge of notes was accentuated, propelling the song along. Piano interjections from the left and electric guitar licks from the right were rendered sharply, distally, over the broad soundstage.

This tendency of the MG-1 to deconstruct music to its constituent parts seemed to diminish the cohesiveness of presentation sometimes. But this may have been merely a reflection of the multitrack recording process. The Vertere may simply be better able to discriminate and relay such detail than other turntables. In many ways it is akin to digital in its precision and raw honesty.

FIIO FA19 REVIEW

July 18, 2024 Comments Off on FIIO FA19 REVIEW

Introduced first in the FiiO FH5, a few years ago now, the S.Turbo is back once more. Designed as a turbine-shaped acoustic tunnel, it serves as a filtering devices that effectively eliminates high-frequency sound waves, emanating from the bass drivers. The goal? To ensure a smooth transition between low and mid frequencies, resulting in a cleaner split between the low, and mid frequencies – for better sound, you get the idea.

Once more, that was all made possible by the use of 3D Printing techniques, allowing the drawing of intricate inner layouts for the FiiO FA19, with a duct almost 3 times longer than the first generation. But that was not the only feature that made a come-back !

Eversolo DMP-A8 streaming preamplifier $1980 Review

Photos of the unit’s exceptionally well-organized innards reveal two power supplies, one linear, one switching. Eversolo says this approach eliminates “interference and noise between the system circuit and the audio circuit.” The linear PSU circuit consists of a multi-winding toroidal transformer “designed to match the characteristics of analog audio circuits.” The switching power supply, meanwhile, is tailored for the system circuit, where it aims to reduce “ripple and magnetic leakage interference,” theoretically resulting in increased purity of sound. The A8 autosenses the voltage coming from the wall and adapts accordingly: You can use it in the US or overseas without flicking a manual switch.

T+A PSD 3100 HV Streaming DAC/Preamp Review

Furthermore, on this rapid-fire thrash metal classic, T+A’s high-performing DAC showed in a nutshell what it’s all about. The rhythm section sounded tight and dynamic, the multiple guitar parts were neatly separated, and it found a layer of depth to the soundstaging that took me by surprise. The energy and clarity was infectious.

Indeed, be it with early-’90s metal or the fairy-tale instrumentation and layered harmonies of The Beach Boys’ ‘God Only Knows’ [Pet Sounds, Capitol Records; 96kHz/24-bit mono], the PSD 3100 HV was up for the challenge of delivering the music with detail, focus and authority.

ampsandsound Kenzie Integrated Amplifier $2900 Review

July 16, 2024 Comments Off on ampsandsound Kenzie Integrated Amplifier $2900 Review

But if you have speakers that are compatible, high efficiency (98 dB or higher, above 100 even better), stable easy 8 ohm load, horns (front or rear loaded), or any speakers specifically designed for use with very low powered amplifiers, the Kenzie Integrated is absolutely worth checking out. It lets you hear what is special about a real triode based amplifier, rather than just a single ended amplifier using other types of tubes, without worrying about hundreds or thousands of dollars for replacement tubes. Ampsandsound may list it under their “specialty amplifiers” but with the right speakers this amp really is something special.
