DALI Epikore 11 Loudspeaker Review

Jason’s lavish praise for the Epikore 11 culminates on a humorous note at the end: “The Epikore 11 is so highly recommended it’s just not funny.” No other DALI speaker has been reviewed quite as enthusiastically as the Epikore 11, which easily earned it our Reviewers’ Choice award. Other DALI speakers have earned this award in the past, but the Epikore 11 is the first to also receive our Recommended Reference Component award.

HIFIMAN PRELUDE REVIEW

July 12, 2024 Comments Off on HIFIMAN PRELUDE REVIEW

I have used the Hifiman Serenade in multiple setups in my office as well as in my living room setup. I have mostly used it with R2R technology DACs such as the Musician Audio Pegasus and Aquarius. I mostly used the balanced inputs on the back, in combination with both the single-ended as well as balanced outputs of this amplifier. Unless specifically mentioned, the in and out connections used for this review are the balanced ones.

I have used a whole series of easy and hard to drive headphones with different driver types. The most used headphones are the Hifiman HE-1000, the Susvara, the HD 800S, the RAAL 1995 Immanis, the ZMF Caldera Closed, the DCA’s, the JPSLabs Diana MR and the original Audeze LCD-2.1 which I just refurbished. We’ll get into the synergy with these headphones later in this article, but it’s safe to say that the Prelude can drive all of these with ease.

TAD Evolution C1000 Preamplifier And M1000 Power Amplifier $24,950 Review

July 10, 2024 Comments Off on TAD Evolution C1000 Preamplifier And M1000 Power Amplifier $24,950 Review

Their prices are the only thing stopping me from recommending the TAD C1000  preamplifier and M1000  power amplifier unconditionally. Yet I’m giving them my highest recommendation. If one’s goal as an audiophile is to recreate the original event as recorded accurately, these two components are as close as one will get for the money spent.

Suppose one decides to purchase one or both of these components. In that case, I hope the new owner of these components can concurrently donate to an organization that helps those less fortunate than this well-off (or very passionate) audiophile. If one cannot find an organization to donate to, I would be happy to suggest one.

Most audiophiles are aware that although these two components are expensive, they are relatively inexpensive components on the market. This includes many components made by TAD. Despite this, the TAD M1000 power amplifier and C1000  linestage are two of the best solid-state components I’ve reviewed or have had in my listening room for quite some time.

Hana Umami Blue Cartridge Review

July 10, 2024 Comments Off on Hana Umami Blue Cartridge Review

I have had the pleasure of testing some of their cartridges over the past and having known Hiroshi Ishihara for many years. He always strives for perfection when it comes to the products he takes under his wing.

The Umami Blue cartridge sits in an interesting price range between the lower and higher-end Hana cartridge models, but as you have already read in the music section, this splendid Hana cartridge delivers the music in abundance and more importantly, like all Hana cartridges, with the punch well above its given price.

McIntosh ML1 MkII loudspeaker $12,000 Review

I view the concept of break-in with one eyebrow arched; we are crossing the line into audio voodoo here, in my opinion. However, the one component category where the idea of break-in makes most sense is with loudspeakers: The idea that moving machined parts with tight tolerances may take some time to loosen up and get in the groove seems reasonable to me. I admire my fellow audio writers who have the willpower to let things run in for days or weeks before they pay any attention to it, but I’m too impatient usually—with something new, I want to hear results right away.

Thales TTT-Compact II Turntable System Review

Dynamics—that’s the key here. The Thales system made a distinct happening of the start and stop of each note, each effect, each sharp moment. So when Waits disburses a grunt or a grumble, it stood out from the other instruments and sounds that make up this complicated song. The Thales does it again on “Metropolitan Glide,” where Waits’s front-and-center vocals gained an appropriate serving of spit and gristle, the Thales expanding the reach and spread of his explosive, whole-head voice
