I often move a review along, going from the audition and note-taking step to writing the actual review in a few months. The Magico speakers have been the primary speakers for over a year and have proved to be an excellent tool to understand the particular characteristics of whatever component was being evaluated upstream. In fact, most of the long-term upstream components including turntables, tonearms, phono stage, DAC, preamp and amplifier have all changed in the last year or so, mostly to get the best from the S1 Mk II. The truly excellent Magico S1 Mk II speakers have continued to be completely enjoyable music makers. But as with other gear, they are destined to be welcomed into a new home one day. That day is heavily dependent on me finally making up my mind which of the beautiful Magico S1 M-Coat colors is preferred. Happy listening!”

PrimaLuna EVO 100 Integrated Amplifier Review

REVIEW: The PrimaLuna EVO 100 Integrated Amplifier
The different sonic characters available with different tubes, is more than another article, so perhaps we’ll pick that up in an upcoming article or video, so stay tuned. Either way, this is another aspect of PrimaLuna ownership that really ups the fun factor. With it so easy to swap tubes, both small signal and output – it’s easy to fine tune your EVO100 exactly to your taste. Me, I’m not a big tube roller anymore, and vintage NOS EL34s are prohibitively expensive. But if you have to go down that rabbit hole, it can be as long of a journey as you’d like it to be. Not to mention Kevin Deal and Upscale Audio have the biggest stash of tubes on the planet, so their staff can help you with your journey.

ROON NUCLEUS PLUS MUSIC SERVER $2,559 REVIEW
February 6, 2021 Comments Off on ROON NUCLEUS PLUS MUSIC SERVER $2,559 REVIEW
The Roon Nucleus and Nucleus Plus are amazingly capable devices. For a power user who needs the flexibility that the Nucleus series offers, and who wants to avoid the time and trouble of building their own Nucleus-type device, the prices are justified. Also, by buying the Nucleus, one gets a full two-year repair or replacement warranty from Roon.
Using the Nucleus via Roon Remote is a very comfortable experience, particularly for users who are already familiar with the interface. Even for beginners, the Roon Remote software has a very mild learning curve, and users will quickly be able to access all the features. I’d have to conclude that Roon’s goal of user-friendliness for the Nucleus has been met.

ASTELL&KERN SE200 REVIEW
February 6, 2021 Comments Off on ASTELL&KERN SE200 REVIEW
I applaud AK for their dedication to innovation and simply trying something different when it came to the Astell&Kern SE200. Going to the trouble to develop and fine-tune not one, but two entire digital/analogue pairings within the gorgeous enclosure the SE200 is quite remarkable in terms of it being an engineering feat alone. So who is it for then? While I did hypothesise that the SE200 is probably best suited for ‘digital tweakers’, it also happens to be an impressively capable and simply stunning-sounding device irrespective of which side of its personality that you choose. Would I make use of the multiple digital options within the SE200? Probably not. But would I be very, very happy to have it as my go-to on-the-go player? You betcha.

Vandersteen Audio Kento Carbon Loudspeaker $39,475 Review
February 5, 2021 Comments Off on Vandersteen Audio Kento Carbon Loudspeaker $39,475 Review
If you are the type of listener who desires sound that is demonstrably more truthful to the signal feeding your speakers, the Kento Carbon is a product to evaluate. There is something unique about the way a time-and-phase-aligned speaker replicates the electrical waveform, making it sound of-a-piece from top to bottom. Some people are not sensitive to this impression; others are. If you are one of the latter, if you are able to distinguish this time-and-phase-aligned acoustic representation of the waveform and feel that the sound is truer to life and want that kind of sound from your loudspeaker, the Kento Carbon will surely make a most favorable impression when properly setup. Prepare to enjoy the listening experience with whatever type of music floats your boat. At the very least, an audition is highly recommended.

FIIO FD5 REVIEW
February 5, 2021 Comments Off on FIIO FD5 REVIEW
But, what’s really impressive is how natural and inoffensive the FD5 seems to be. Even when I cranked up the volume, or played my usual Techno tracklist, the IEM never threw me back. On this aspect, the FiiO FD5 sounds much more like an open-back headphone, than an IEM: wide soundstage, powerful low kicks, and a very nice layering, that keeps the voice upfront all the time.
Bass especially, feels amazing. It’s deep, clean, and dwells deeply into my eardrum, without overpowering the rest of the spectrum. It’s a cool rumble, one that carries you through your musical journey and leaves you in a better shape than you were when you embarked. Even more, if you can hook up some nice player like the FiiO M11 Pro,
