“A final very useful attribute is the sensitivity. Headphone sockets on mobile phones are a dying breed, but if you do still have one the Billie Jean will go impressively loud from just a small amount of power. Connecting it to Audiolab’s M-DAC Nano (My Oh My 449) demonstrates the same ebullient presentation, but the portable DAC doesn’t help it regain those losses in fine detail. The Billie Jean might not be a true warts-and-all music monitor, but this comfortable and well-made in-ear is a great deal of fun and well worth seeking out at the price”

“While the app’s built-in FAQ details some of the adjustments, the sheer number of available tweaks can be heady stuff for the average user. It’s a bit like having a sports car where you can adjust the wheel alignment settings using the dashboard controls—great if you know what you’re doing, but somewhat intimidating it you don’t. You can certainly stick to the basics when setting up the SB-2000 Pro, but it’s also nice to know that deeper fine-tuning is possible if you choose to dive in. For example, I was able to use the EQ settings to effectively tame a known 65-Hz peak in my room.”

UNIQUE MELODY MASON V3+ $3199 REVIEW

“There was an initial change in the line-up since the V3 in terms of accessories which a chrome-finished titanium alternative. And yes, the chrome finish is a fingerprint magnet par excellence. However, current orders since Q1 will no longer receive this case and instead, you get a Dignis designed blue zippered leather case.

I actually prefer the leather case over the older titanium version. The titanium version is clearly sturdier and quite attractive but nothing beats a lighter case for day to day portability. There is plenty of space on the inside also with protective velcro pockets to stash the monitors in and prevent them from hitting something stored in the main pocket such as the cable.”

ACCUPHASE E-650 INTEGRATED AMPLIFIER £10,600 REVIEW

“Talking of subtlety, there’s as much fine detail as you could wish for, including those vital ambience cues. It’s not a smooth, airbrushed presentation – any beauty is entirely down to the music. Unlike some more analytical amplifiers, detail isn’t pushed at you for its own sake; it is layered but not separated or highlighted, so the Accuphase seems to trigger the ‘music appreciation’ part of my brain more than the ‘music analytical’ part. You perceive the music as a gestalt rather than as a collection of elements, which is closer to what happens in a live experience. It’s that ‘rightness’ thing again. Key musical touch points: timing, pitch, tonal colour, dynamics, and no doubt a myriad of other parameters such as phase relationships, all rendered just a little bit more convincingly, so the brain has less work to do in maintaining a ‘willing suspension of disbelief’. So, I now find I have the capacity to notice that when Tord Gustavsen plays piano on ‘At Home’ from Being There [ECM], while this is unquestionably jazz, his precision of touch has much in common with classical technique, for example V.kingur .lafsson’s exquisite rendering of Philip Glass Piano Pieces [DG]. And that’s not me getting all analytical again, it’s just the sort of thing I’d notice in a live gig, when I’m engrossed and not having to process the signal just to make sense of it. Dave Brubeck, ‘Unsquare Dance’ from Time Further Out [Columbia] and the little miracle of how everything comes to an end ‘just so’, is even more miraculous when you can hear how the quartet plays with the timing without ever letting it get away from them.”

ASTELL & KERN AK T5P 2ND GENERATION REVIEW

“While somewhat recessed, the AK T5p V2’s mid-range has a rather lovely lush texture, giving a slightly ‘wet’ sound to both instruments in the lower mid-range. The guitar tracks in QOTSA’s ‘Little Sister’ have a nice, tactile body to them, but at the same time are also somewhat laid-back. The wood-block percussion and backing vocals in the same track have an extremely enjoyable and impressive ‘out-of-head’ effect.

Macrodynamics are on the whole fairly impressive – those 45mm tesla drivers create a decent amount of slam and punch when called upon. Bass drum hits in Pink Floyd’s ‘Fearless’ land with a nice, visceral whump into your ears. However, I curiously found myself experiencing the same feeling every time I listened to the AK T5p V2 – I always felt like I needed to keep turning up the volume. I continually felt like I was wanting more from them in terms of dynamics, and I really wanted to extract a bit more drama from them but they never quite got there. ”

Magnepan unveils Little Ribbon System

“Manufactured in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, the LRS (Little Ribbon System) is cloth covered with a 32mm-thick flat panel standing 1,220mm high and 370mm wide. Unlike conventional box speakers, which radiate sound forward, the LRS emits audio from both the front and rear, and where most speakers use dome tweeters and midrange or low-frequency drivers, it instead adopts a thin film aluminium ribbon. In simplest terms, air is shifted and sound waves are created by the ribbon, while its ultra-low mass enables it to respond quickly to the electrical signal that comes from the amplifier to produce bass, midrange and treble frequencies claimed to be more detailed”
