When the guns came out, the intensity ratcheted up. Frequently, sound engineers will de-emphasize the subtle parts during these situations, instead focusing on the immediate action. I’m not so sure that’s a good idea as the perimeter sounds tend to make or break a scene like this. Things like brass hitting the ground after someone fires their gun, or screams from terrified people desperately trying to flee, make up the tapestry of those moments. The Scouts seemed to relish this part, producing those characteristics without breaking a sweat.

Heartbreak Ridge stars Clint Eastwood as grizzled old Marine Gunnery Sergeant Thomas Highway, a man who is about to retire from the Corps. Or get booted from it, depending upon your perspective. He gets himself assigned to his old unit to train one final reconnaissance platoon. There’s not much to challenge a subwoofer for pretty much the entire movie so I don’t drag it out often, but I do when there are speakers involved. Such is the case now, but to be honest I just felt like watching it. There are times while doing an evaluation that I don’t concentrate on only a few choice scenes, but rather just kick back and watch an entire movie simply because I enjoy it. Besides, the first couple of flicks had a lot of material for a subwoofer. It was time to skew the balance toward the Scouts

Three screws brace the suspension for transportation. Once removed, the small armboard and bearing are freed and move in unison. Next, the sub-platter is dropped into the self-lubricating bearing bush. The wide belt is placed on the motor pulley and positioned on the lower area of the subplatter. From there, the beautifully machined, damped aluminum platter is placed on the sub-platter. The machining is so precise that even when spinning, the platter appears still!

Levelling the table is a simple affair too, as this design uses three feet rather than four, making quick work of getting it right on point. The table is powered by a sophisticated external power supply, which is attached to the table with the included umbilical cord. There are connections for both RCA and XLR interconnects. I used the included RCA interconnect, which has the ground wire wrapped within its braided jacket. Once connected, there was a noticeable absence of hum, buzz, or anything but the faintest hiss. Well done!

I was very surprised at the results of trying this SACD again with both the updated EMM DA2i D/A and the EMM PRE.  The sense of congestion was entirely gone.  For all practical purposes, so was the brightness (or sense of brightness, as the case may be).  What happened?  I believe it is the clarity of the decoding/processing operation in the DA2i, combined with the exceptional clarity of the EMM preamp.  The result is an excellent musical experience that is not the least fatiguing (as it tended to be in the past), but is instead delightful in its detail, sparkle and energy.  The top end is open, the cymbals are airy and authentic.  The strings are smooth and reasonably warm.  An excellent listen.

The xDuoo DM-01 delivers a bass response that leans more toward warmth and musicality than sheer impact. Compared to solid-state sources like the FiiO K11, the DM-01 is slightly sub-bass light, favoring a fuller and thicker mid-bass presentation.

While it still reaches impressively low, sub-bass notes tend to be more reserved, with the emphasis placed instead on mid-bass warmth and body.

This tuning lends itself well to genres like funk and disco, where rich bass guitar lines come through with a lush, rounded quality.

The DM-01 plays synth basslines with a relaxing fullness yet retains enough resolution to preserve the textural detail and harmonic nuances of acoustic instruments and plucked strings.

Despite its mid-bass tilt, the DM-01 avoids excessive bloat or bleed into the midrange. It maintains a clean separation that ensures clarity in modern pop, rock, and hip-hop tracks.
