“For a portable tube amp, the B300s has some pretty good numbers for its amplification stage. One of my own perceived weaknesses of the Sony digital amplifiers is the lack of power compared to the analog amp stages from the likes of iBasso.For example, the Sony 1Z is only capable of 250mW + 205mW into a 16Ω load on its balanced output with a much lower 60mW + 60mW single-ended.. The Zx300 has slightly less at 50mW + 50MW into 16Ω unbalanced and 200mW + 200mW into the same load.”

“Both the Studio Electric M4 and I got a workout, the speakers from the system, and me from moving them around and setting them up in each room. Speaker placement is and should always be a concern. I have yet to find that magical speaker that is comfortable just about anywhere in a room, and before any of you get any ideas, these speakers while musical are not that magical. I was able to get enjoyable non-fatiguing sound in each room, and in keeping with the designer’s suggestion they were placed on 28” stands, one inch taller than recommended, and placed them about 24” from the rear walls in the smaller rooms and a good 36” from the rear wall in the primary room. In all instances, following basic geometric ratios with respect to listening position and distance, I had a really fun week.

“Dr. Cavalli has also included a protection circuit on the Platinum just to help ensure against damage. I accidentally triggered it a couple of times trying to plug in headphones with the volume up and bassy music playing. Oops. Triggering the protection circuit will cause the light on the front to turn red and music will stop playing for about 30 seconds while the amp takes a little siesta.While I wouldn’t go so far as to say, “It’s built like a tank”, it is a solid feeling component and nothing was loose, wonky or made me feel like it was destined to break. The Monolith Liquid Platinum has a good spread of features that make it useful in a lot of situations.But enough of all this build quality stuff! Let’s move on to the fun part… the sound.”

“I found after experimenting that the Sky Towers to my ears sounded much more full-bodied after being bi-wired. While not a runaway decision, bi-wiring seemed to add a deeper bass extension and gave the playback a natural breath that was just irresistible. While the Sky Towers do pack a stinging musical punch, if you are looking for loudspeaker that can forcibly knock you back down in your seat, these Totems might not be your cup of tea. Unbridled power and an iron grip choking your music to death is not what you are going to find here. The Sky Towers are a sonically graceful home run that allows you to rock when you need to rock and allows you to be carried off when you need escape. The Sky Towers offer a rounded and complete delivery with enough finesse and detail to allow you to joyfully rediscover your music collection all over again. “Hitting the HINT 6 hard with some of the more raucous concerts from the newly released R.E.M. Live at the BBC box set was a lot of fun. This amp really did a great job communicating the band’s rhythm section’s agility. I also learned that this music sounds best played loud, so I took advantage of the amp’s power reserves.
The HINT 6 never sounded like it was working very hard, even with my inefficient Magnepan .7 speakers. With that much power on tap, the speakers sounded better and better played nice and loud.”
