Jerome Sabbagh’s Heart has also become an important demo disc for me because it crawls so far into the music or, more accurately, the making of the music. Al Foster’s drumming, in particular, is unusually up-close and personal, especially the way in which he manipulates his cymbals and hi-hat through physical manipulation–it’s evocative of Shelly Manne in its range of unique sounds. Through the Carmel 3s I had the consistent impression that Foster was flanking me, to my right, so close that I could reach out and pat him on the back. We all talk about recordings where the performers feel like they’re in the room with you, but I had more of a feeling that I was up on stage with this gifted trio, trying to keep up with all the magic.

Bluesound’s new Powernode promises more power and less distortion
August 1, 2025 Comments Off on Bluesound’s new Powernode promises more power and less distortion
The Bluesound Powernode was something of a pioneer in the world of streaming amplifiers, so a new model is always big news. The 2025 incarnation (called, like its predecessor, simply ‘Bluesound Powernode’) offers more power while promising less distortion and smarter home integration.
The 100W per channel of ‘DirectDigital’ amplification is an upgrade on its predecessor’s 80W per channel of ‘HybridDigital’ amplification.
The device is designed for “people who want powerful sound in a simple, streamlined package – a way to stream music and enjoy TV without the clutter and confusion of multiple boxes, remotes, or wires,” Bluesound says.

NiPO A100 $399 Review
August 1, 2025 Comments Off on NiPO A100 $399 Review
The NiPO A100 is a linear sounding device with a clean profile, which seems to be another one of NiPO’s niche points. The frequency response is well extended, covering deep bass, and to highs that produce lots of sparkle.
The background is dark, and there is no hiss perceived, even with sensitive IEMs. This darkness makes way for a clear view into the music it’s producing.

Kiwi Ears Septet $269 Review
July 31, 2025 Comments Off on Kiwi Ears Septet $269 Review
The bass on the Kiwi Ears Septet is excellent, with a clear focus on clarity and definition rather than weight or boom. Each note is precise, letting the character of bass guitar strings come through with ease.
Sub-bass rumble is present and felt, adding depth and body to the overall sound and preventing any sense of dryness. Mid-bass is controlled with a quick decay, making sure it never muddies the rest of the mix.
There’s a refined quality to the tuning, with the low-end never sounding forced or exaggerated. Subtle details from drum hits are easy to pick out, and each low-frequency sound lands with its distinct shape.
The bass here is not energetic or overwhelming, instead leaning into a more balanced and natural presentation. The emphasis is on texture and subtle impact, letting each part of the bass register be heard clearly.

Cayin RU9 $499 Review
July 31, 2025 Comments Off on Cayin RU9 $499 Review
I personally found the modern tube mode to strike the best balance, especially when paired with my Shanling HW600 – awesome headphone by the way- but more on that later.
Even better, the signal path remains powered by premium components at every step: JRC NJW1195A volume controller, dual LDOs (TPS7A4901 + LP5907), and a low-ripple LT8334 DC/DC converter – the kind of layout that screams no-compromise engineering.
The result? A circuit that not only handles high-resolution files with ease, but delivers them with finesse – whether you’re plugged into the balanced 4.4mm out or the regular 3.5mm jack. An outstanding foundation for the RU9’s dual-amp topology, and one that clearly sets it apart from mid-range competitors – despite the relatively low price of the DAC.
