“The Audio Physic Avanti is capable of outstanding bass reach and authority, but, unlike many loudspeakers with full-range performance, proved itself to be relatively unfussy with respect to placement. Perhaps owing to its ingenious internally-mounted woofer configuration, the Avanti could be placed close to rear or side walls without the bass becoming overblown or boomy. This flexibility with respect to placement afforded me the opportunity to, in addition to utilizing the Avantis in my smaller dedicated listening room, install them in a much larger shared living space, which requires me to place speakers closer to room boundaries.”

HIFIMAN RE-800 IN EAR MONITORS $699 REVIEW

“My only issue with the design was getting a good fit. None of the provided eartips gave me a perfect fit. I like my IEMs to seal completely and tightly in the ear canal, providing lots of ambient noise isolation. All the eartips provided with the RE-800s were too wide at the tip and too narrow at the back to give me a good seal. But of course this is different for every person. I’d probably end up investing in custom molded eartips. But of course every listener will have to try them out to be sure. A side effect of the fit issue and the weight of the RE-800s is that they didn’t want to stay put when moving around. If the fit was tighter in the ear canal, I bet this would not be an issue.”

“Finally, the Thetas worked well with every amplifier we connected them to, even the 9 watt per channel Coincident SET proved a fantastic match at moderate levels. Incidentally, the Thetas offer a pleasing musical experience at these levels, so if you aren’t someone who really needs to rock the house, a high quality 10 to 30 watt per channel amplifier will serve you well. This opens up a tremendous amount of possibilities for system building.”

“With the plainchant Pange Lingua (anon.), from The Tallis Scholars Sing Josquin (16/44.1 AIFF, Gimell), it was as if I were seated in a back pew of Merton College Chapel, Oxford, where it was recorded. As the voices rose to the ceiling, the Moon 240i adeptly portrayed the vast emptiness of the chapel, giving me a sense of its size. I love the way this track was recorded, with the microphones well away from the singers. The sensation is one of a solemnity that suits this music. One experiences an emotional impact when hearing things like this, and though it’s rather intangible, the ability of the Simaudio Moon 240i to trigger them in me was undeniable.”

High Fidelity Cables MC-1 Pro vs. MC-0.5 Power Conditioners

“All of our technologies, including the MC-0.5, indeed works off magnetic conduction but in regards to the MC-1 Pro, the similarities end there. The MC-1 Pro has a new active circuit that helps strengthen the magnetic system. This “active” magnetic system exists only in our Pro Elite power conditioners but operates a bit differently. This system helps to better center electrons and functions as if it were wired in series. A simple series of capacitors are used to help the magnets center the electrons. They are used for the magnetic waveguide not as a filter themselves.”

MARTINLOGAN IMPRESSION ESL 11A HYBRID ELECTROSTATIC LOUDSPEAKER

“Whether or not you decide to use the optional PBK system, the Impression ESL 11A is one of the hidden secrets in the MartinLogan line-up. Some will miss this on the way to bigger speakers, but they shouldn’t. It’s a powerful, dynamic, musical fun maker with the usual MartinLogan characteristics of good imagery and great detail, but adds to that a relatively small footprint, and terrific integration between cones and panel. Factor in the benefit of subtle DSP room compensation and this electrostatic hybrid design comes extremely highly recommended!”

“If the benefits of the analog original are really that apparent, how about resorting to LP? Comparing the Previn performance on LP to the CD version shows the same yawning chasm in quality that I’ve come to expect. The LP offers a deeper, broader and far more dimensional soundstage, richer colors, greater presence and a far greater dynamic range. It’s not so much that the LP goes louder, but it delivers more concentrated energy to greater musical effect. Comparing it to the Berglund recording again highlights just how clearly these amps differentiate between performers and performances. Berglund is hardly a shrinking violet, as witnessed by his EMI/BSO Sibelius cycle, but in this repertoire the Bournemouth simply can’t match the discipline and the resulting concentrated power and expressive contrast generated by the LSO, power that is essential to this piece.”
