Fiio X5 3rd Gen Portable DAP Review
August 9, 2017 Comments Off on Fiio X5 3rd Gen Portable DAP Review
” I think the Fiio X5 3rd gen has sound quality that has a good level of detail and soundstage or layering. It won’t be able to compete with the Opus #3‘s level of soundstage and layering but I think it is good enough for its price. Mids to lower mids to bass sound full to my ears, round and not over powering. The treble region is not that sparkling to my ears and it may need some refinement. Sorry, but for those who are looking for that “glorious highs”, you won’t find that here.”

McIntosh MP1100 Phono Preamplifier Review
August 8, 2017 Comments Off on McIntosh MP1100 Phono Preamplifier Review
“As a McIntosh lover, I have waited long enough for their statement phono preamplifier but the wait has been worthwhile. At $8,000 USD, the MP1100 is not cheap, but hardly expensive in the world of high-end phono stages. Certainly cheaper than the last three phono stages I reviewed (CH Precision P1/X1 – $90,000 USD, Tenor Phono 1 – $50,000 USD, and the AR Ref Phono 3 $14,000 USD). Like all McIntosh equipment, the MP1100 is a safe purchase. The long list of user-friendly features combined with the naturally conservative McIntosh house sound makes it an easy decision for the McIntosh owner. For those new to McIntosh, the MP1100 is a serious contender in its price range. The MP1100 will not be my last phono preamplifier, but it is one which I intend to keep and treasure for a very long time”

Reference 3A Reflector Stand Mounted Monitor $12,000 per pair Review
August 8, 2017 Comments Off on Reference 3A Reflector Stand Mounted Monitor $12,000 per pair Review
“However, the Reflector is still a small enough stand-mounted speaker to reap all the benefits of the design: it has only two drivers, is very efficient, has no crossover network, and its imaging and soundstage is fantastic, so if properly positioned it is possible for the speakers to become sonically invisible. Its tweeter behaves as good as any dynamic tweeter I’ve ever heard. Best of all, the two drivers work together as a seamless pair, creating a soundstage as large as the recording will allow it to be. The Reflector is an extremely musical speaker, too.”

Aurender A10 Music Server $5500 Review
August 7, 2017 Comments Off on Aurender A10 Music Server $5500 Review
” The Aurender A10 is a fantastic product that brings Aurender’s already proven and well-regarded server technology to a broader market, while including a high-quality preamp and DAC. Except for the lower price, there’s nothing budget about this component.”

AUDEZE LCDI4 IN-EAR $2495 REVIEW
August 7, 2017 Comments Off on AUDEZE LCDI4 IN-EAR $2495 REVIEW
” Both portraying a wide and deep soundscape and literal wall of sound, the LCDi4s were able to go from a very quiet and intimate opening to a large, expansive and dynamic finish, really showing the dynamic range of these IEMs. “Kept Woman” really reiterated what I had heard with the previous song, incredible sound staging, very natural frequency response and an incredible ability to extract the smallest details from a recording put the LCDi4s into a very small and select group of in-ear monitors (and full sized headphones for that matter) with these outstanding capabilities. But what truly set the LCDi4s apart was just how big they sounded. I previously thought that world class sound staging was only reserved for full sized open-backed headphones, but I guess that’s no longer true.”

Moon by Simaudio Evolution 860A Stereo Amplifier $15,000 Review
August 7, 2017 Comments Off on Moon by Simaudio Evolution 860A Stereo Amplifier $15,000 Review
” Looking back, I think that maybe I’ve been a bit too effusive in my praise of Simaudio’s Moon Evolution 860A. But I’ve listened to more music in the last few months than I have in maybe the last year. The last few additions to my system have been fortuitous: JE Audio’s HP10 phono stage, the Moon 860A, and now Pro-Ject’s RPM 10 Carbon turntable (review forthcoming) are working together so very well that, down here in my basement, I’m experiencing a bit of an audio renaissance.”

Grand Prix Audio Monaco 2.0 Turntable $37,000 Review
August 6, 2017 Comments Off on Grand Prix Audio Monaco 2.0 Turntable $37,000 Review
“I can’t tell you how impressed I was that GPA’s Jesse Luna had the Monaco 2.0 up and rocking in about 15 minutes. When I swapped tonearms from the longer Tri-Planar arm to the standard length one of mine, it only took me about 20 minutes to get things dialed in. Being that this is such a high-performance table, I still suggest having your dealer do it or getting one of the Jedi’s to make sure you are getting all of the performance you are paying for. You don’t take your Ferarri to the corner tire store for an alignment, do you?”
