Exploring 3D Audio for Headphones on Amazon Music

Following through on Amazon Music Unlimited’s “any headphones” maxim, I pulled out four options to test this theory — namely, my high-end Sennheisers, wireless Marleys, Sony ’phones I use mainly for Zoom calls, and truly old-school USB Apple earbuds — to see just how the claim stacked up. I listened to a wide selection of Amazon Music Unlimited’s spatial audio mixes in Dolby Atmos while I rotated through my headphone quartet connected with a variety of devices including my iPhone, HP laptop, and Roku Ultra. True, the better the headphones, the more immersively intense the listening experience was — but I can report if you wanna go the earbuds route, your experience will be relatively top-notch, and likely better than you might expect.

Naturally, I began my headphone sessions at the top of the spatial audio foodchain with a key selection from the irrepressible Steven Wilson. I cued up one of the best Atmos tracks from his January 2021 release The Future Bites, and one that wasn’t used in last year’s spatial audio evaluation feature — namely, the frenzied 9-minute product acquisition indictment “Personal Shopper.” The all-aswirl middle section starting around 5:20 rattled around in my head like an errant aural pinball. Here, the track’s special guest voice Elton John rattled off a litany of allegedly desirable consumer goods, starting from the center position before each subsequent item citing fanned out in all directions. I also picked up on some additional details I hadn’t focused on in previous open-air listening sessions, such as the subversively angelic/operatic vocal lines supporting Sir Elton’s declarations.

FELIKS AUDIO ENVY REVIEW

May 7, 2022 Comments Off on FELIKS AUDIO ENVY REVIEW

The first option impacts the performance and it as such is called the Performance pack. It sets you back €500 Euro and in exchange you get upgraded 300b tubes (Full Music) and UPOCC (single crystal copper) signal wiring. Our review sample has the performance pack. The second option is all about the looks: Oak wood is included and American walnut (our version) is €200 Euro extra. That brings the price of our review sample to €7.199 Euro. If you want another special type of wood, it’ll set you back another €400. Other customisations are possible, just ask Feliks Audio about them. In example your own laser engraving, custom internal components or multiple inputs and outputs for maximum functionality. Everything goes.

NAD M10 V2 BLUOS STREAMING AMPLIFIER $2,499 REVIEW

May 6, 2022 Comments Off on NAD M10 V2 BLUOS STREAMING AMPLIFIER $2,499 REVIEW

Though I could have hooked my TV up to the M10 V2, I decided to use it just for music. The HDMI input allows for home theater listening with the addition of wireless surround speakers for a 4.2 experience, but oddly, there is no inclusion of a center channel. Sure, you could “phantom” it, but it is an unfortunate exclusion. In fairness, this device is not designed to be a home theater receiver and the fact that you can hook in your TV is really a bonus anyway.

I played music from all genres and found the M10 V2 to be detailed, dynamic, and easy to use. The unit ran warm after hours of use but never got hot to the touch. I never sounded strained or overtaxed. The touchscreen volume wheel was very sensitive, and the remote volume was quite responsive as well. The BluOS app has everything you need to control the sound of the M10 V2 and offers almost all the major streaming services. You can adjust the tone, the subs and turn Dirac on/off on the fly. A nice touch is the transition from one song to another. The volume fades in and out briefly so you don’t blast your speakers or ears. It is a subtle effect, but pleasant.

New Acapella Audio Arts “Hyperion” loudspeakers

May 5, 2022 Comments Off on New Acapella Audio Arts “Hyperion” loudspeakers

Hyperion speakers are the new penultimate speaker from Acapella – styled like the Apollon, but with four 15 inch woofers per speaker, instead of four 10 inch drivers (Apollon also has two 10 inch isobaric drivers per speaker). I think they took some lessons learned from the 18 inch woofer in the flagship Sphaeron speakers and reportedly the efficiency (and immediacy)  of the Hyperion is also quite high (nearly as high, as the Sphaeron).

There is a “review” of the new Hyperion speakers on a Chinese website (if you need to translate it, use chrome and select the ‘translate’ icon in the right side of the chrome address bar).

It is not really an in-depth of the Hyperion speaker’s sound, however, mostly a technical overview of Acapella in general and some good technical details of the Hyperion, with photos!

Hyperion Acapella Hyperion speaker in-depth evaluation (full)

The couple who owns our rental in Palo Alto has decided to sell [and, no, we can’t afford to purchase this nice little $3.8M Eichler ranch home] so we are moving. Since we have to crate our Apollon speakers anyway…. it’s a good time for someone to make us an offer so we will then have space for the Hyperion

Moonriver Audio Model 404 Reference Integrated Amplifier £4995 Review

Play Carmen Gomes, Inc.’s latest album, Ray! [Sound Liaison SL1052A; DXD], and the sheer intimacy of Gomes’s voice, accompanied by no more than guitar, bass and drums – or indeed just bass on ‘The Sun Is Gonna Shine Again’ – makes for a compelling listen, the amp working with source and speakers to give a real ‘artists in the room’ effect.

There’s no overt ‘hi-finess’ here, but instead an honest, rich and enveloping sound from boogie to sweeping orchestra to sultry jazz. While some will wish for more power, a headphone socket, or even a functioning USB input, the 404 Reference still offers a refreshing alternative to amplifiers with more obvious physical size and swagger.
