“I’ve been meaning to set up a proper network-attached storage (NAS) system for a while. This seemed like a good time. I went to B&H, a sort of photography and technology superstore here in New York—if you’re a photographer you know it—and came home with a Synology NAS enclosure and four 4TB Western Digital hard drives. A few hours later, my NAS was up and running. My music library now lives on this NAS, set up in RAID 5 configuration, which means that if any one of the four discs fail, I can pull it out and replace it and it will heal itself—no data loss.

“Optimally positioning the SB-3000 subs in my room was critical for attaining smooth integration of its output with that of the Quads. Usually I position each sub behind each Quad panel in the two front corners of the room, but this setup overloaded my small, square listening room. I then moved each SB-3000 subwoofer into opposite corners of the room, as advised in the SVS manual, with positive results, including excellent blending of subs and satellite speakers, consistent bass down to extremely low frequencies, and no room overload.

“qdc has created a flagship monitor that definitely plays in the big leagues and rivals some of the global players. The Anole VX to me stands head-to-head with some of the industry’s finest IEMs and deserves every spotlight it can get. qdc shows us, that in spite of the recent trend of multi-driver, multi-tech hybrid flagship monitors, an all BA design can still be very competitive.
The switch-system of the Anole VX makes it a very versatile monitor. I can see many people being taken care of with it. People that enjoy a good neutralish sound, others that want more bass, vocal lovers and treble heads. They all can find what they are looking for in qdc’s Anole VX. My personal favourite is the standard setting, as I just love the balanced sound with superb body and soul.”

“Of course, there was that surprising degree of quiet—but beyond that, with the Air Force V, the sound was bigger and more fully fleshed out than I had imagined was possible. The bass lines on “Mother Earth Blues” were firm, grippy, and forcefully presented. On the bottom end, bass extension was effortless from both guitar and kick drum, and neither got lost in the generously live room sound. The snare drum snapped and, of course, the guitar transients were sharp and cleanly drawn.
Shortly thereafter, I was off to Europe (see last month’s Analog Corner), but as soon as I returned home, I played a direct-to-disc record that mastering engineer Rainer Maillard had handed me in Berlin: the Joscho Stephan Trio’s Paris-Berlin (BMS 1817V). This “finger picking good” trio of double bass and dueling acoustic guitars plays Django Reinhardt-style acoustic swing music with remarkable speed and dexterity.”

“The Bluesound’s commendable sense of soundstage takes the deceptively complex arrangement of Fink’s No Sleep and creates a convincing and cohesive sense of space in front of the listener. The Spendor A1 undoubtedly helps here, but the Powernode 2i demonstrates that it is extremely capable of making sense of any recording and even the challenging Dionysus by Dead Can Dance is delivered in a remarkably engaging manner. Having said that, the larger scale of this album does reveal the Powernode’s limitations and it begins to sound a little strained as the volume level increases and it may also struggle with less forgiving speakers or to drive larger rooms.
Working within its comfort zone, however, the Bluesound makes for a consistently engaging listen. It has a good grasp of rhythm and timing and delivers a sonic performance that does a fine job of ensuring that less up tempo material flows precisely as it should while also letting the joyously exuberant Tokyo by White Lies move with the pace and impact it deserves. While bass depth is never truly seismic, there is enough pace and detail to connect with and engage any listener.

“As a desktop hub, the Vena II proved highly attractive as an all-day listening companion, playing everything from radio streams to random music thrown up by Roon radio in a mixture of file formats. It was also able to prove its abilities when used into headphones, driving the likes of the Focal Spirit Pro [HFN Dec ’15] and Bowers & Wilkins P9 Signature [HFN Mar ’17] to impressive effect, the new amp circuitry giving a sound both well-weighty and informative, and with excellent grip on the ‘phones in use.
It was only when I reached the final track of 2002’s The Symphonic Eric Coates [Chandos CHAN 9869] that I was tempted to move the amp back to the listening room and onto the big speakers again to give the music full rein. Yes, I’d given in to temptation, and magnificent the Vena II sounded too, powering out the BBC Philharmonic under Rumon Gamba playing ‘The Dam Busters March’ – it had to be done, really.”
