“A good example of this would be the ethereal track ‘Hey Now’ from London Grammar’s If You Wait [Sony Legacy, 16/44.1] as played through RHA’s remarkable CL1 Ceramic earphones powered by the DACAMP L1. The CL1 Ceramics are not easy earphones to drive, but the DACAMP L1 really made them sing on this track, neatly revealing the pinpoint precision of Dan Rothman’s guitar work, the profoundly atmospheric vibe of Dominic ‘Dot’ Major’s almost meditative keyboards, and the lofty, upward-reaching beauty of Hannah Reid’s vocals. With help from the DACAMP L1 and the CL1 Ceramics, the listening experience became deeply moving and inspired a quiet sense of reverence—almost like listening to an electronica or pop-inflected take on evensong as performed in a quiet cathedral.”

There are more loudspeaker models that can “throw” a huge panorama in front of a listener, but almost always it seems like an artificial operation, and the sound stage is not just “big” but rather “blown up”. ” As much as I like the “Black” in triode mode one of the amp’s strengths is how good it sounded in the ultra-linear mode. This gives one the opportunity to own a Class A amp that can drive rather inefficient speakers. I should also mention this amp brought out the best of a very good digital source. Some might say that means it is a forgiving amp, but I’d rather say that somehow it lets you hear the best of the source as long as it is a good musical source.”

” The first part of the Nocturne in C Minor is slow and contemplative. Here, Ott’s highly emotive phrasing and touch were convincingly conveyed by the beautiful attack-decay and sustain-release characteristics of her notes through the TIDAL speakers. I thought it a real shame that the Nocturne in C Minor was not performed in its entirety on this track as the complete work also showcases a pianist’s pyrotechnic virtuosity. Nevertheless, I listened to The Chopin Project uninterrupted from beginning to end a number of times, which was exceptional considering the digital musical cornucopia I now had at my fingertips. I am certain that the Piano Diacera G2’s honest re-creation of the stark beauty of this minimalist music is a major reason why I enjoy it so much.”

“The main reason that Ed Meitner prefers single-bit to multibit DACs is that the former are inherently linear. In a single-bit converter, any value is made up by adding or subtracting the same small value many times. That value is set by a single resistor. In contrast, multibit converters build up values by adding different combinations of smaller values, those values set by combinations of resistors. No matter how close the manufacturing tolerances of those resistors, it’s impossible to get the multiple resistors in exact ratios to each other — the resulting signal level will always be just a bit off. Ed Meitner believes that the superior linearity of single-bit designs is audible. However, single-bit processing isn’t without challenges of its own”

” The Gen3’s front panel is simple and attractive, in an anthropomorphic way. The halo ring-light of its standby/on button, surmounted by two status LEDs, makes it look like a “wow” emoji. All three front-panel lights are activated by the rear-panel on/off rocker switch next to the IEC power-cord socket; above which is an oversize circuit-breaker button and a tiny switch, labeled Status LEDs, for turning off the front-panel eyes/status indicators. Each of the Gen3’s amplifier modules (two for stereo) has switch-selectable unbalanced RCA and balanced XLR inputs, and a pair of five-way speaker binding posts.
