NAIM NDX 2/XPS DR MUSIC STREAMER AND PSU REVIEW

” also contrasted the NDX 2 with and without the XPS DR power supply, it sounds very good indeed without the supply but the extra control that the XPS DR brings does give everything more power, weight, and authority. Dynamics benefit from this and bass lines have a solidity that brings substance to the whole picture. It’s not essential and I enjoyed the streamer with its onboard supply for some time before adding the XPS DR: however, going back proved to be a less enjoyable experience. I’m told that the 555 PS represents a considerably bigger jump but it costs £2,600 more so you’d want a decent result even in the high-end world of diminishing returns.”

MR SPEAKERS AEON FLOW HEADPHONES $800 REVIEW
September 5, 2019 Comments Off on MR SPEAKERS AEON FLOW HEADPHONES $800 REVIEW
“After firing up the Arcam rHead amplifier, I started things off with the London Music Works version of STAY, from the Interstellar soundtrack. As soon as I hit play, the AEON flexed its dynamic range capability as if to invite me to challenge it further. As the organ comes in at around the 1:40 mark, it’s incredibly easy to not only pinpoint its exact location in the mix but also admire the haunting timbre of the instrument itself. The delicate reverb tails from each instrument are replicated perfectly, all the way into pitch black. The track sounds detailed and powerful, and more of an enjoyable listen, rather than a clinical one. The soundstage here is relatively good but doesn’t deliver as many crazy “out of the head” moments as say, the Sennheiser HD800.”

EMPIRE EARS VALKYRIE REVIEW

“I mentioned it in the disclaimer, I received a prototype for this review. Thus my unit does not reflect the final production design. Valkyrie will come with a black shell and a dragonhide face plate. The developer of the design currently holds 2 patents in polymer science for high solids coating chemistry and the process itself was developed over the past 17 years. Dragonhide features a unique Dichoric optical core within each lamination, resulting in dramatic color shifts as the viewing angle changes.”

Aperion Audio Novus 5.0.2 Speaker System Review

“Setting the speakers up is fairly straightforward. As there isn’t anything too unconventional about their design, they don’t require anything particularly special in terms of placement. If this is your first time setting up a pair of surround speakers, I’d refer you to the user manual for helpful tips on proper setup. Potential buyers should note that the A5 height and surround bookshelf speakers don’t come with wall mount brackets in the box, so be sure to get yourself a couple with rated weight support for these speakers if you need them mounted.”

Sony WF-1000XM3 Noise-Canceling Truly Wireless Earbuds Review

“As far as codecs, the Sony WF-1000XM3 only supports AAC and SBC, not even AptX HD or Sony’s own LDAC. I believe this is due to the bandwidth limitations of having each earbud connect to your device – which improves stability. Which is probably more important – I guess.”

Vimberg Mino Loudspeaker Review

”
From what I’ve learned regarding how Jorn was able to reduce the overall cost of the Vimberg speaker line, for starters – although sourced from Accuton, the drivers for the Vimberg line are from the standard stock of drivers rather than the much higher costing custom units that are made exclusively for the Tidal line. Another cost reduction process has to do with the finish. For the Vimberg line, Jorn uses a special machine for the finishing process. Additionally, the finish is approximately one-half as thick as the meticulous, labor intensive, manual process used for creating the stunning finishes of the Tidal speakers. Beyond that, the highly polished stainless steel mounting brackets and feet for the Tidal speakers has been replaced on the Vimberg with glass-pearl streamed anodized aluminum units. Obviously there are more areas where Jorn was able to trim costs but for high-level understanding, these are the primary areas that provide a significant amount of the cost reduction for the manufacturing process of the Vimberg loudspeakers.”

MARANTZ PM-KI RUBY INTEGRATED AMPLIFIER £3,500 REVIEW
September 2, 2019 Comments Off on MARANTZ PM-KI RUBY INTEGRATED AMPLIFIER £3,500 REVIEW
“My first experience with this amplifier was in tandem with the matching SA-KI Ruby disc player/DAC and Revel 126Be loudspeakers, which produced an extremely polished and refined result but not one that was in danger of causing the listener to break a sweat. This was a case of three rights not adding up to a wrong but neither was it a successful combo, so I concentrated on the player in a variety of systems and left the amplifier to fend for itself. And it fended rather well once I had found a sympathetic speaker. That said it didn’t do badly with my usual choice of transducer, the PMC Fact.8, which brought out the musical skills of the PM-KI Ruby rather well. I spent some time listening to vinyl spun on a Rega RP10 with Aphelion MC cartridge and was pleased to find that the MC stage on the amp had sufficient gain to produce a dynamic result where the recording warranted it. Not all my favourite music is that well produced, however, and where compression has been used the Marantz will make it fairly clear. It’s a usefully transparent amplifier albeit one with a refined presentation that can fool you into thinking that it’s smoothing over the fine detail. In fact, it’s just very fine grained and revealing – put on something raw and it will sound that way. There’s decent power and drive on Ryley Walker’s Primrose Green[Dead Oceans] but it is reined in by the annoying powers of limiting. And yet that doesn’t get in the way of the music, which is close to the performance you’d expect from a decent standalone phono stage. ”

Simaudio Moon 390 Network Player and Preamplifier $5300 Review
September 1, 2019 Comments Off on Simaudio Moon 390 Network Player and Preamplifier $5300 Review
“You, the reader, must decide for yourself if the 390 is right for you. For my own system, I require more balanced inputs, and already have an excellent phono preamp. Simaudio could make the 390 more modular so as to offer more flexibility to the customer, offering for instance different combinations of inputs. This would, however, make the 390 considerably more expensive. I would recommend that Simaudio consider some factory break–in for the units, thus alleviating some of the burden on the customer. I’d also suggest they improve their MiND app.
