“The musicality and staging depth can also be enhanced using the XBass+ which nicely targets 100Hz and below to deliver more power and impact. I tend to prefer that approach and more often than not I keep XBass+ on along with the 3D+. You definitely will hear more low-end body around 60Hz to 100Hz and a touch more warmth but nothing that is overly dominant or bleeds into the mids.”

HEADAMP GILMORE LITE MK2 CLASS A HEADPHONE AMPLIFIER – REVIEW
August 2, 2018 Comments Off on HEADAMP GILMORE LITE MK2 CLASS A HEADPHONE AMPLIFIER – REVIEW
“It is rare that I come away so impressed with a piece of gear. While many other amplifiers struggle to overcome basic issues like cheap parts, inconsistent volume controls, sketchy build quality, etc., here comes a really nice piece of gear that does absolutely everything well for the very reasonable price of $499. I applaud HeadAmp for their attention to detail and quality in the build – it is thorough and if there is a weak spot, I haven’t found it yet. This is the polished, professional level of quality I wish we could expect from every manufacturer, but alas, that is not the case.”

AUDEZE LCD-MX4 PLANAR MAGNETIC HEADPHONE $2,995 REVIEW
August 1, 2018 Comments Off on AUDEZE LCD-MX4 PLANAR MAGNETIC HEADPHONE $2,995 REVIEW
“Sonically, the LCD-MX4 comes across as ‘son of the LCD-4’ in many respects, in particular showing an energetic, and very revealing midrange that sounds positively luminous and that is highly reminiscent of the sound of Audeze’s top model. Upper midrange and treble articulacy and resolution are very good, too—perhaps not quite matching the performance of the LCD-4, but not far off the mark. Most importantly, the LCD-MX4 offers a well-integrated and all-of-a-piece sonic presentation from the lower midrange right on up to the highest treble frequencies. Thanks to this ‘cut-from-whole-cloth’ sonic quality, the LCD-MX4 encourages listeners to resist dissecting or analysing what they are hearing and instead to relax and simply drink in the music as a whole. Moon by Simaudio 888 monoblock power amplifier Review – $118,888/pair
July 31, 2018 Comments Off on Moon by Simaudio 888 monoblock power amplifier Review – $118,888/pair
“Not having heard Simaudio’s less costly Moon 880M monoblock, which was reviewed by Brian Damkroger in June 2013, I can’t be sure, but I’d bet the Moon 888 sounds similar, albeit with greater nuance, grace, and finesse, especially in the upper octaves, and greater transparency overall. Of course, if the recording is poor, you’re going to hear that poorness in all its awful glory—but that’s not the amplifier’s fault. However, with the best recordings, regardless of genre or whether it was on LP, CD, or hi-rez file, the Moon 888s produced the highest level of sound quality in my system, passing along warmth or chills, transparency or sludge, grain or greatness, as dictated not by the electronics but by the recording itself.
To say that the Moon 888s delivered what I’d expect and demand for $118,888/pair is not to say that it will necessarily meet the expectations of every audiophile, especially those who prefer warmth and, perhaps, a more fleshed-out harmonic presentation even if it’s not on the recording. But they sure met mine.”

EMM Labs DA2 Reference DAC and PRE Stereo Preamplifier Review
July 30, 2018 Comments Off on EMM Labs DA2 Reference DAC and PRE Stereo Preamplifier Review
“Ed Meitner and Emm Labs are legendary in both professional and consumer high end audio. One doesn’t become legendary without providing legendary products and experiences to customers for decades. That’s what EMM Labs has done and continues to do with its flagship DA2 and PRE. The world’s first 16xDSD signal processing along with a handful of other propriety features and legendary sound quality put the DA2 DAC on the top of the EMM Labs mountain and in a class with only a couple components in all of HiFi. Sonically the DA2 has a transparency and a soundstage that delivers on the promise of high end audio. Reproducing music with all its warts when warts are present and in all its glory for those rare recordings that really shine. The DA2 and PRE are in rarefied air no doubt at $25,000 a piece, but the best of anything is never inexpensive. ”
