VERISONIX N501 ELECTROSTATIC HEADPHONE REVIEW

” he N501 has quite the specifications list. It retails for $499 USD which makes it one of the most affordable ESL headphones on the market. To raise even more eyebrows, it also lists a frequency range of 6 Hz to 50 kHz; most headphones support 20 Hz to 22 kHz. That’s not to say all of it is within the human hearing range, but Verisonix is making it known that it can cover the entire audio spectrum. Likewise, with the doubling of the frequency range, we also get the headphone weight which is 600g or 21 ounces. This puts the N501 at almost twice the weight of typical headphones. As for the driver, Verisonix notes it as being a 4030 e-stat + 40mm hybrid dome-type dynamic driver. The N501 still manages an effective impedance of 32 ohms and a Sound Pressure Level of 120 dB making it surprisingly easy to drive.”

DAVID BERNING COMPANY 211/845 POWER AMPLIFIER $75,000 REVIEW

“Finally, I’d like to note that these impressions of the 211/845 were made with the Constellation Altair 2 linestage feeding the Berning, which, given my description of the system here, speaks volumes about that linestage’s transparency. I drove the 211/845 directly from the Berkeley Alpha Reference DAC Series 2 as well, but preferred the sound with the Altair 2 in the chain.”

“The cabinet is equally carefully designed. Budget constraints mean that there’s no place for high tech materials or extravagant engineering solutions to controlling cabinet resonances, so the designers have gone back to basics (while using cutting-edge measurement and design equipment) to come up with a wooden box that provides a solid platform for the drive units to work from.”

My kind of high-end listening room!

” This room boils my blood! “Oh, beauty before me, beauty behind me, beauty to the right of me, beauty to the left of me, beauty above me, beauty below me, I’m on the pollen path”. CD’s and vinyl being served right! It reminds me of two listening rooms with phenomenal room acoustics, I’ve have had luxury to visit. Intriguingly room acoustics implementing vinyl records, CD’s and books was unmatched with what I’ve heard with typical acoustical panels in action. Makes you wonder”

AAVIK ACOUSTICS U-300 INTEGRATED AMPLIFIER $30,000 – REVIEW

” I have taken pains, so far, to avoid a detailed comparison of the U-300 with my reference tube gear. I can’t say that the Aavik sounds like tubes, but neither can I say that it sounds solid-state. It sounds like music. Perhaps it is not quite as full-bodied or three-dimensional as competitive tube gear, but it is close enough to be totally satisfying on the broadest range of music. And it is so fast, and so black of background, that it leaves much tube gear in its wake. Moreover, finding tube preamps and power amps that will drive the 20.7s with the ease and alacrity of the Aavik is not an easy or inexpensive undertaking. The U-300 is the first solid-state preamp and amp combination I have auditioned, in my own system, that offers a fully satisfying alternative to high-powered tubes.”

Jeff Rowland Continuum S2 Integrated Amplifier Review

” What I love about the sound is the balance and timbral accuracy. Look, there’s no way an aesthete like Jeff Rowland is going to allow anything in his kit that isn’t first class. At the price and logistics, I’m sure he made some compromises. But you’ll be hard pressed to find them under day to day listening conditions.”

Ultimate Ears Reference Remastered IEMs Review

“As mentioned, the soundstage of the UERR is more mid-centric compared to the UERM’s laidback mid-section. As a result, the UERM offers a more wide-reaching projection of sonic cues to create a larger stereo image than the more intimate UERRs. Despite this, the UERR has excellent centre stage and is relatively more cohesive than the UERM. Instrument separation is excellent in spite of the smaller stage that the UERR has to work with.”
